A pair of turquoise ground Longwy faience lamps with Iznik inspired decoration in slight relief, mounted in fine ormolu. c.1870

Italian ceramist and designer Amedee da Caranza was hired to bring his revolutionary ideas on orientalist enamelling to Longwy, in order to compete with Chinese cloisonne and cater to the new taste for orientalist decoration. This pair of bravura lamps would be among his earliest production and the very height of fashion. In 1878 he moved on to take these ideas to Bordeaux. He later created exquisitely fine glass cabinet objects.
