A rare and unusual pair of Consulat period ormolu candlesticks attributable to master bronzier Claude Galle c.1800-1805. These sticks have two very unusual and distinctive features. The sharply defined facets of the stem are cast as a separate sleeve. Furthermore, the bold sculptural element to the base is clearly imitating a military or diplomatic decoration, a detail unique in our experience. Here Galle would seem to be working up a model that he would later supply to the Emperor Napoleon.
